CHAPTER 10

DARCY

Darcy walked down the London streets with a bit of spirit in his step, and it was not just the anticipation over taking ownership of his new home that had him so happy. There seemed to be a little more joy in his demeanor these days, and while he knew it was not just Sophia who brought him such joy, he was not quite ready to admit what, or who, was delighting him so as of late. For the moment, it was easier to attribute his overwhelming happiness to the little girl in his life and not the young woman who seemed to spread humor and light everywhere she went.

Oxford Street in Mayfair was filled to the brim with busy Londoners, each engaged in business or shopping or simply taking a midday stroll. As Darcy made his way to his new home, people were bumping into him from every direction, so he almost did not notice when a man intentionally bashed into him with his shoulder.

“Excuse me, sir,” Darcy said with a dismissive tone as he walked on.

“Yes, excuse you,” the voice of George Wickham replied, rising above the crowd. Darcy stopped where he stood as his blood ran cold. When he turned around, there the scoundrel was, dressed far better than he had any right to be.

“What are you doing here, Wickham? I knew you were a reprobate but I did not think you were mad. What are you doing in England?”

He strolled up next to Darcy as if he had not a care in the world. “I can go wherever I please, Fitzwilliam. You can not prevent me from traveling,” he said with the arrogance of a man with a much better station. With a groan of frustration, Darcy began walking toward his destination once more, in the hope that Wickham would leave him be. Of course, he did not, which forced Darcy to continue to acknowledge his existence. Wickham walked so close to him, a passerby might think they were friends.

The sheer idea of it made Darcy sick to his stomach.

“You did not answer my question, Wickham. What are you doing here?”

The rogue stopped right in front of Darcy, forcing him to stumble over his own feet. He only corrected himself at the last moment before tumbling into Wickham and sending them both to the ground.

“That is none of your concern,” he said with an amused smile as Darcy walked around him and tried to disappear into the crowd once more. Wickham, however, seemed intent on staying in step with him no matter what tricks Darcy attempted.

“If it is none of my concern, and you have nothing of consequence to say to me, then be on your way, George! I am sure you have some doorstep to darken elsewhere in the country.”

Wickham chuckled. “I do not. And I thought you wished to know why I was in England.”

Darcy stopped once more and turned to Wickham, his brow furrowed in violent frustration. If it would not cause a stir, he would knock the scoundrel to the sidewalk right here.
